Types of Aid

Types of Financial Aid Available

Grants, scholarships, loans, and work study are all different ways to help you pay for college.

Some aid you never have to repay, while others are loans that must be paid back after graduation. We'll break down each type so you can make informed choices about funding your education without taking on unnecessary debt.

Grants (Free Money)

Grants are financial aid awards that you do not have to repay. They’re typically based on financial need and can come from federal, state, or college sources. If you qualify, grants can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for tuition and other costs. The FAFSA is your first step to accessing most grant programs.

  • Federal Pell Grant – For undergraduate students with financial need.

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) – For students with exceptional need.

  • New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant (TAG) – For eligible NJ residents enrolled full-time at approved colleges.

  • NJ STARS – For NJ high school students who graduate in the top 15% of their class and attend a NJ community college.

Scholarships (Merit Based or Need Based)

Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, community service, leadership, or other personal characteristics. They can come from Atlantic Cape, private organizations, or your future transfer college. Many scholarships are open to current college students, not just high school seniors, so keep applying each year.

Loans (Borrowed Funds)

Student loans allow you to borrow money to pay for college, but they must be repaid with interest. Federal loans typically offer lower interest rates and more flexible repayment options than private loans. Borrow only what you need and make sure to understand your responsibilities before accepting any loan offer.

  • Federal Direct Subsidized Loans – Based on financial need; interest does not accrue while you're in school.

  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans – Not need-based; interest begins accruing immediately.

  • Parent PLUS Loans – For parents of dependent undergraduate students.
